The Gold Basketball pack swung from -12.4% EV to a peak of +10.8% on August 28, and the move traces almost entirely to a single card: a Michael Jordan 1995-96 Topps, listed at $993, that appeared in the pool between the open and peak readings.
At open, the pool's top card by EV contribution was a Michael Jordan 1998-99 Upper Deck Ionix at $199, contributing $3.91 to expected value. By the time our tracking caught the peak at 4:06 PM PT, that Jordan 1995-96 Topps was sitting at 1.96% odds and contributing $19.47 on its own, more than four times anything else in the pool at that moment. On a $100 pack, a $993 card is nearly a 10x hit on face. That one entry accounts for roughly the entire 23-percentage-point EV swing.
What else moved
The rest of the pool at peak was heavier than at open, too. A Shaquille O'Neal 1992-93 Fleer Ultra ($221) and a LeBron James 2003-04 Upper Deck ($211) were both present at peak but absent from the before-window snapshot, each contributing over $4 to EV. A Michael Jordan 1991-92 Fleer ($178) also appeared fresh. Several cards from the open reading were gone by peak, including the Giannis Antetokounmpo 2025-26 Bowman Chase ($1,259, contributing $3.15), the Keyonte George 2023-24 Panini Prizm Chase ($318, 0.25% odds), and the LeBron James 2023-24 Panini NBA Hoops Chase ($403). Those pulls dragged the pool down from the open reading but were more than offset by the new entries.
The window
The +EV window opened around 2:30 PM PT and peaked at 4:06 PM PT. It lasted about 2 hours total, closing at 4:29 PM PT with EV back down to -14.4%. By close, the Jordan 1995-96 Topps was gone from the pool, and the composition had rotated substantially. Pool size held at 61 cards throughout all four snapshots, so the churn was a card-for-card swap rather than any expansion or contraction.
The math at peak: 61 cards, all Lineup slots at 1.96% odds, with a $993 Jordan as the clear anchor. Everything else was supporting cast.
